Week 11

I am in a 3rd grade classroom, we have been working a lot with aspects of comprehension. One of the lessons that I taught was on categorizing. The students had to read a pretty boring story on artifacts from the past and categorize them. To liven things up a bit, I found some modern day items online and organized them into a powerpoint to show them and had them categorize them. Then they wrote a short response paper to the categories that they chose. Having the powerpoint, really helped the students become engaged in what could have been a horribly boring lesson. They really enjoyed it!!!

Technology in the classroom

In my classroom, I don't feel like I have a ton of resources, but I do have one thing in mind that I am excited for. I am teaching the students in 3rd grade how to categorize information. So i have created a power point presentation that will give them lots of different items that they have to organize into categories. I think it will be really fun for them to one, visualize the objects and two to have a change of scenery from just the white board. When my mentor teacher does use the projector, the students seem to be a lot more interested in the information that is being presented.
I think it would be fun to have the students create their own power point, but they haven't learned that yet. I have found that they love to be on the computers and they learn pretty well from them.

First week in the schools

Being in the schools has been such a good learning experience. I am in the third grade at East Meadows in Spanish Fork and I love it. I never thought that I would like that grade, but it is really fun. I have actually been really suprised with how little technology is used. I guess I expected a lot more. I say this with care because there is still lots of it being used, but not as much in the instructional aspect of teaching, which is where I expected most of it to be.
A lot of the testing is done on computers now, which is new to me. My class goes to what they call "Keyboard chatter" where they learn basic typing skills. My teacher has only used the projector once and the overhead twice.
The students love the computers though and they are getting more and more comfortable with them. With the testing moving toward computers more and more, the teachers are spending more time allowing the students to be on them to get them more comfortable.
