what I learned

The main thing that I learned from watching others posts was that you can teach a ton of subjects with simple technology and that it doesn't take a ton of time. Technology a lot of the times makes it a lot easy because it doesn't require that you bring objects into the classroom but it still allows the students to have a visual.

2 ideas

One idea that I think would be way fun is using google earth in the lesson. It would be such an easy thing to incorporate into any subject. I loved that it was something that could be something that the students could really relate to, something maybe that could be way close to their home.
Another idea that I really liked was teaching symmetry with a powerpoint. I think it is such a cute idea to use a bunch of different things that the students could see as symmetrical or not symmetrical. It works really well to show things that are visual.

intranet safety

I talked to my sister. She is 30 years old and has 3 children ranging from the ages of 6 to 2. I asked her what her concerns about the intranet are and how she keeps herself, her kids, and her husband safe in the use of the intranet. They do a lot of good things to check up on one another. They all know eachothers passwords so that they can check and make sure that everything is good. They have the ability to check on a shared moniter the use of the computer downstairs when they are upstairs. Right now with her kids being as young as they are, she doesn't worry as much as what they willingly get into, but she worries about things that just pop up. They have talked to their kids about if they see something that they don't know what it is or that is bad, they are to just run and get mom and dad.
Somethings that I talked to her about was the risk of people being able to track you on the intranet. She is one that likes to sign up for things a lot trying to find good deals:) I hadn't realized how easy it was for people to find everything out about you, so I gave her the www.netsmartz.org website so she could go there and see how easy it really is.
I felt like this was a positive experience in the both of us talking about things that we knew and had learned. I felt like her kids are still a little young for a lot of the things that were discussed on the site, but it is something she can prepare for when they are older.

technology reading

The articles that I read were all really good and informative in the importance of intranet safety. I read for my 4th article a talk from President Hinckley, "An ensign to the nation, a light to the world." What I really liked about this article was the fact that it addressed the fact that there is a huge problem and concern with the media world that we live in today, but we don't need to fear. We know what we need to do and we know who can help us along the way. We can be an ensign to those that don't understand the importance of the evils that can occur in the media.
As I read and watched a lot of this material, I realized how easy it was to get into trouble. I always knew that we have to be really careful, but I didn't realize how accessible things are. I think as a teacher/parent it is really important that we show how media can be used in a good way instead of shunning its use at all. We live in a technology world and we need to be aware of its uses so we can function. I think that some of the most beneficial information we have is how we can avoid hurting ourselves and others with the use of technology and it is so important that we know the steps that can be taken so that we can teach others.

Week 11

I am in a 3rd grade classroom, we have been working a lot with aspects of comprehension. One of the lessons that I taught was on categorizing. The students had to read a pretty boring story on artifacts from the past and categorize them. To liven things up a bit, I found some modern day items online and organized them into a powerpoint to show them and had them categorize them. Then they wrote a short response paper to the categories that they chose. Having the powerpoint, really helped the students become engaged in what could have been a horribly boring lesson. They really enjoyed it!!!

Technology in the classroom

In my classroom, I don't feel like I have a ton of resources, but I do have one thing in mind that I am excited for. I am teaching the students in 3rd grade how to categorize information. So i have created a power point presentation that will give them lots of different items that they have to organize into categories. I think it will be really fun for them to one, visualize the objects and two to have a change of scenery from just the white board. When my mentor teacher does use the projector, the students seem to be a lot more interested in the information that is being presented.
I think it would be fun to have the students create their own power point, but they haven't learned that yet. I have found that they love to be on the computers and they learn pretty well from them.

First week in the schools

Being in the schools has been such a good learning experience. I am in the third grade at East Meadows in Spanish Fork and I love it. I never thought that I would like that grade, but it is really fun. I have actually been really suprised with how little technology is used. I guess I expected a lot more. I say this with care because there is still lots of it being used, but not as much in the instructional aspect of teaching, which is where I expected most of it to be.
A lot of the testing is done on computers now, which is new to me. My class goes to what they call "Keyboard chatter" where they learn basic typing skills. My teacher has only used the projector once and the overhead twice.
The students love the computers though and they are getting more and more comfortable with them. With the testing moving toward computers more and more, the teachers are spending more time allowing the students to be on them to get them more comfortable.

TPACK Questions

For the content of this lesson, I will be using Google Earth to show the students learn more about the Revolutionary war and give them a tour of what a few of the historical sites look like.  The lesson comes from Standard 2, Students will understand the chronology and significance of key events leading to self-government, Objective 1 Describe how the movement toward revolution culminated in a Declaration of Independence.
The pedagogy that I will be using is giving the students an opportunity to learn by visiting a few sites as they fly through google earth.  At each of the locations, the students will be asked to record what they learned.
The  technology that will be used is both a path and image overlay.
At the end of the lesson the students will feel like they have visited some of the sites that gave that were part of giving them their freedom.

TPACK questions

We will have the students choose a poem that they would like to make a digital story from.  The content that we will be using is focused on the 3rd grade Language standards.
Standard 1
Oral Language-Students develop language for the purpose of effectively communicating through listening, speaking, viewing, and presenting.

Objective 2
  1. Identify specific purpose(s) for viewing media (i.e., to identify main idea and details, to gain information, distinguish between fiction/nonfiction, distinguish between fact/opinion, form an opinion).
  2. Use a variety of formats (e.g., drama, sharing of books, personal writings, choral readings, informational reports) in presenting with various forms of media (e.g., pictures, posters, charts, ads, newspapers)
The Pedagogy that will be used in the project is poetry interpretation.  It will be a good way for them to learn how to interpret the text written by showing pictures of specific emotions and reactions.
The technology that we will use is photostory.  This will be a good tool because it is fairly easy to use and the students will be able to see the work they do.

TPACK questions

For the using technology assignment, we focused on helping the students gain a greater  understanding of the sun, moon, and earth.  From the UEN state core standards, we focused on standard and objective #1 from the 3rd grade science section.  We really wanted this to be an opportunity for the students to learn by experience.  The technology tools that we used to help us were Inspiration, Celestia, and Google Sky.  In using these the pedagogy that we wanted to focus on was observing, classifying, inferring, predicting, and measuring, acquiring and processing data, and analyzing the data.  We felt that by using the technology resources, it really helped us to accomplish our goals of our objectives.  I felt pretty apprehensive in the beginning about knowing how to use the technology in a teaching situation because I hadn't had much experience with any of them.  But I found that as I just explored and tried different things that I was able to learn a lot.  I realized that this is exactly what we want our students to do.  We want them to feel confident in themselves so that they will explore and try new things.  Technology can be such a fun way or learning and it gives students a way to learn and remember facts in a different way other than just reading the text.

TheTech Savvy Teacher

How Do You See the World?

By Becca Pike and Angie Permann

This shows the options available in Celestia

Do you go outside and look through a telescope to look at the moon? Or do you sleep outside under the stars? Have you ever wondered what the sun looks like up close? What if all these answers and more were available to you with a push of a button and your computer screen. We are here to teach you how this can become reality.

A look at the Moon through Google sky

A look at the view of the earth on Google sky

A view of the sun and the earth's size in comparison in Google sky.

First, we want our students to be able to understand the appearance and the shape of the sun, moon, and earth through their own learning experiences. We want them to see how each play a very important role in providing us with life through light. Google sky and Celestia are the tools that help us to get a view of these three scientific wonders up close and learn what the relationship is that they have with one another.

Our objectives come from the UEN 3rd Grade Science content, Standard and objective #1. Students were to describe the appearance of the Earth and the moon, describe the shape of the earth and the moon as being spherical, explain that the sun is the source of light that lights the moon, and list the differences in the physical appearance of Earth and the moon as viewed from space. The students were to record their findings in a graph using Inspiration 8.

This provides a fun hands on and interactive way of learning about the earth on which they live and the light that they receive from the sun and the moon. This helps them to see their world in a whole new light.

The students record their data on Inspiration 8

Kidspiration

Kidspiration was one of the technologies that I explored. I really liked it because there were a ton of different options for different things. I thought it would be especially good for the younger ages because it was so simple and basic. It had tools on it that would be nice to have for all the students but sometimes isn't possible. It gives the students the opportunity to work on their own but still makes learning fun. Some specific things that I really liked that I thought would be really beneficial for younger elementary students was that math section. I feel like sometimes math can be very repetitive and routine for students. Knowing that that is how we learn concepts, I think that Kidspiration could really step in and bring a different type of learning to the table. Especially with the world moving to a new age of technology, it is important that kids get a hold on both concepts.
Overall, I think that it is just a great tool that can make the learning process different and fun for all types of learners.

TPACK

The TPACK was really informative for me.  I hadn't heard anything about it before, but I can see how necessary all of the different aspects that make it up are.  Being aware of the technology that is available to us, especially educators, is so important.  If we are aware and use what we know, we can really make learning come alive for our students.  The pedagogy aspect of it is essential because it is how we really can know "how" to teach.  What works best for the students that we are working with and what is the best way to approach the subject matter.  Content specific aspect I think is really important for the teacher because it is what they focus on.  I think of it as their specialty.  All of them together just make up a good teacher.  It is so important for us to be really well rounded.

RSS and Web 2.0

RSS and Web 2.0 were a little bit confusing to me at the beginning. I had never heard of either them before this class so it was all pretty new information. But I think it makes things tons easier. I think personally this would be a really good way to keep parents informed on what happens in the classroom with their children. It would require a little bit of extra work for the teacher but I think it would be worth it. I feel that it is so important for parents to be involved in the schools and what is going on in the classroom. For those parents who work and don't have a lot of extra time, this could be a good tool for them to stay up on things.

Technology in the life of Angie

I honestly have not had much exposure to technology in my life. I pretty much get by with the basics of being able to use the email and basic searches online. I have taken a few classes in high school and one at BYU, but I feel like the technology changes so much that I just get behind soon after I take it. But I do feel like I am able to learn about it quickly when I need to. I am excited to become more technological savvy.
